How Do You Accessorize a Living Room?

When you’re looking at how do you accessorize a living room, there are several different ideas that can come to mind. While each one is easy to implement if done properly, they’re also each easy to replace if you should move on to something else. Here are some living room ideas that can easily be incorporated into any type of room decor.

o Colorful Artwork. This isn’t an easy living room renovation idea. It can be challenging to find decorative art that isn’t expensive and that you love in a price range that most of us can easily afford. This is one of those times when it’s good to have a list and to think about buying a quality work. Keep in mind that you may want to take a few trips to the local art store in your area to find the exact piece or painting you want, which is helpful because it will allow you to compare prices and styles before committing to the purchase.

o Antiques. This is another easy one that has plenty of living room design ideas. Artwork and antiques can go hand-in-hand. If your living room is full of old furniture, it’s a great way to accessorize with more up-to-date pieces that you love. You could hang a painting over top of a coffee table or add vintage knickknacks to cabinets.

o Lighting. In order to give light to a room, you need a lot of different living room design ideas. Not only are there plenty of lights available, but you can also choose to light certain areas or give an entire room a soft glow by using dimmers. For the best effect, you should use light fixtures that match your current interior design and are within your budget. If your living room is painted a neutral color, consider putting in lighting that matches your theme.

o New windows. Many homeowners are opting for new windows for living room remodels. If you’re going this route, you should keep in mind that there are many different types of window coverings to choose from, including vinyl, curtains, blinds, and draperies. You’ll also need to install new lighting fixtures, such as light bulbs, halogen and fluorescent lights. Take into consideration any special lighting you have in the home, such as chandeliers, sconces, or lamps.

o Flooring. This includes not just the floors themselves, but the baseboard, padding, baseboards, and wall and floor tiles, as well. How you prep the room for a remodel depends on the length of time you plan on living in it and the size of the project. In some cases, like in small bathrooms, you may only need to tile the floor and baseboards. Other times, you will need to install a full sub-floor to work properly and provide the foundation for new flooring.

o Hardwood flooring. In most cases, your best bet for a hardwood floor in your living room renovation project is to stick with solid, smooth flooring that’s built to last. While you may either choose to use carpeting, laminate, or tile, in many instances solid wood flooring will provide the greatest durability and longevity. Also, you’ll need to make sure that your sub-floor is sealed and free of stains before installing your flooring. You may either do this yourself, by applying some type of stain or sealer, or you may hire a professional to do it for you.

o Secondary Purpose Items. Adding cushions, artwork, plants, or candles can be a good way to tie a living room together. Some items are functional, others for decoration or as a secondary purpose. It all depends on your renovation plans and the look you want. Artwork and plants can help to enhance a room, but they should only be considered as accent pieces. Candles and pictures are great, as both are functional, beautiful, and easily moved.
